Roulette rules

· Place Your Bet: Start the game by placing your very first bet and selecting the chip size that you would like to bet with.

· Dealer Spins the Roulette Wheel: The wheel is spun and the ball is dropped onto the wheel. You need to place your bets at this time before the betting session is closed by the dealer.

· Outcome: The wheel comes to a stop, the ball settles in a slot that have the number 1 to 36 on them with one or two green slots depending on the version of the roulette (i.e. American double zero or European single zero roulette). Your winning number would be the slot on which the ball stops finally.

· Payout: You will receive a payout if you have correctly predicted the number or a group of numbers in that series (e.g. numbers 1 to 12, even or odd). The payout is dependent upon the type of bet and the size of the bet that you have placed.

Roulette odds

While roulette seems like a simple game, it is important to familiarise yourself with the odds or chances that you may triumph each game. There is a specific mathematical probability of succeeding and these odds are affected by the rules that apply.

Roulette is played with a spinning ball with an equal chance of landing on any of the 37 (European size) or 38 (American size) slots in the wheel. In roulette, the bets are categorized as the outside and the inside bets.

Odds and Payouts for Outside Bets

The outside bets include the possible outcomes that the ball will land on:

  1. Red number
  2. Black number
  3. Even number
  4. Odd number
  5. First 18 numbers
  6. Second 18 numbers
  7. Columns:
    1. Column 1 (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34)
    1. Column 2 (2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35)
    1. Column 3 (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36)
  8. Dozen:
    1. First 12 numbers
    1. Second 12 numbers
    1. Third 12 numbers

The outside bets of red or black, even or odd, first 18 and second 18 numbers have a 48.6% chance of victory in European roulette and a 47.4% chance in American roulette. This is high probability, and as a result the potential payout of 1 to 1. You will be therefore receiving an additional chip to your initial bet. For example, a payout of 1 to 1 means if you bet Rs.350 and you are successful, you will receive Rs.350 and your original bet of Rs.350.

The outside bets of Column and Dozen cover 12 numbers on the table, which is a third of all possible outcomes. As a result, there is a 32.4% chance of victory in European and a 31.6% chance in American roulette. The potential payout is 2 to 1, meaning if you bet Rs.350, and you are successful, you will receive Rs.700 plus your original bet of Rs.350.

The outside bets have the following odds:

Odds and Payouts for Inside Bets

In comparison to the outside bets, the inside bets include betting on a smaller group of numbers or a single number. These bets have significantly lower odds of victory than the outside bets, however the payout is much higher. The inside bets include:

  • Straight – single-number bet (e.g. 21)
  • Split – two-number bet (1 through 37) that are not neighbours on the table (e.g. 2 and 10)
  • Street – three-number bet that are in a row (e.g. 4, 5 and 6)
  • Corner – four-number bet that forms a square on the table (e.g. 1, 2, 4 and 5)

  • Basket – five-number bet on zero, double zero, 1, 2, and 3  – only available in American roulette

Odds and Payouts for Called Bets

Called or ‘announced’ bets are exclusive to European roulette and as a player you are able to make this wager by simply ‘calling’ the number that you wish to bet out loud; instead of placing chips on the roulette table. This includes:

  • Neighbours of Zero – covers 17 numbers on the wheel that are close to the green zero. The player places 9 chips on all those numbers (22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25).
  • Thirds of the Wheel – 12 numbers situated directly across from the Neighbours of Zero (27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33).
  • Zero Game – 7 numbers close to the green zero slot (12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15).
  • The Orphans – all other numbers not previously mentioned in the called bets (1, 20, 14, 9, 17, 34, 6).

Of the called bets The Orphans has the highest payout chance of 35 to 1, but it also the lowest payout of 17 to 1 along with the Thirds of Wheel.

Roulette tips

As one of the most exciting games in a casino, here are the top 6 tips to help you beat the odds and come out on top!

  1. Concentrate on Making Your Money Last: Make it a point to enjoy the experience of playing roulette for as long as possible. Stick to bets that have a payout of 47% such as black or red, odd or even, first 18 and the second 18 numbers. At the end of the game make your money last.
  2. Use Smaller Notes: Make sure the amount of money that you have to play with will last by placing smaller bets instead of larger Rs.3500 or Rs.7000 bets.
  3. Save Your Profits: It’s a good idea to save half of every profit that you make so that you do not spend it. This gives you a higher chance of ending the game with profit instead of walking away from the game with nothing.
  4. Choose European Roulette: If you can, avoid playing the American version of roulette, as the European version has slightly better odds as it lacks the double zero (00).
  5. Never Make the Worst Bet (0-00-1-2-3): The American roulette has both zero (0) and double zero (00). In this version, never place a bet on 0-00-1-2-3 as it carries the worst odds of succeeding at 7.9%.
  6. The Martingale Better System: This system helps you to start at the lowest bet size for the table and place your bet on an even-odds payout, such as red or black, high or low numbers, even or odd. This is because the probability of the ball landing on the outside bet is close to 50%. Continue to make the same bet but double to wager each time you lose. When you succeed for the first time this will cover the losses and give you one extra chip. After succeeding, start back at the lowest bet size and repeat the process.
    1. Note: Be careful because you an easily run out of money quickly after only a few rounds.
